Sweetgreen Expands Seed Oil Free Menu for January.

Published January 7, 2025.

Sweetgreen just announced new seed oil free menu items for the month of January. Sweetgreen expanded the seed oil free menu by introducing five limited-time protein packed bowls with their green goddess ranch dressing. In October 2023, Sweetgreen made national headlines by changing their cooking oil across all 230 locations. Rather than using seed oils, the restaurant industry norm, Sweetgreen switched to cooking all of their proteins, grains, and vegetables in extra virgin olive oil and avocado oil. Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) contains the highest level of polyphenols, which are micronutrient antioxidant compounds. When heated, polyphenols maintain extra virgin olive oil's stability and prevent it from breaking down and creating harmful byproducts. Some polyphenols are lost from heat but a significant amount remain in the extra virgin olive oil even up to temperatures over 400 degrees fahrenheit. EVOO has the healthiest fat profile of all cooking oils because of its monounsaturated omega nine fatty acids composition.

The new seed oil free menu include three online order only items, the Honey BBQ Steak + Ranch Plate, Super Green Goddess Salad, and Spicy Green Goddess Bowl. You can order the Blackened Chicken + Ranch Bowl and the BBQ Chicken + Ranch Plate online or in-store. You an order the online only items and look for the nearest location by using the Sweetgreen app or the Sweetgreen website.

Over the weekend, I tried the new Honey BBQ Steak + Ranch plate with the green goddess ranch dressing. Staying true to their roots, the steak was 100% grass-fed and pasture raised and everything was made with extra virgin olive oil and avocado oil. Cattle play a key role in regenerative ecosystems by grazing on land and returning nutrients back to the soil. Sweetgreen truly encompasses a farm to table approach by sourcing from local and sustainable American farms. You can find many of the farms they work with on a big chalk board in their stores.

Sweetgreen supporting organic and regenerative agricultural practices is a win for our health, food systems, farmers, and soil. The restaurant understands the importance of biodnyamic growing practices and their long term impact on our health and land. Sweetgreen has been my go to lunch spot since 2019 when I learned about their farm to table approach and commitment to using 100% compostable and PFAS "forever chemical" free bowls. I even wrote a number of research papers in college on their PFAS free packaging since it was a revolutionary invention at the time. Sweetgreen stores have composting bins to ensure their packaging is properly discarded, which exemplifies their holistic supply chain values.
