Mystery Seed Packets
The Texas Department of Agriculture once again issued an urgent warning after collecting over 1,500 unsolicited "mystery seed" packages mailed to residents from China. Residents in Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington have also reported receiving unlabeled seeds from China.
Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller reports that the packages, which have been arriving mislabeled as jewelry or gifts since 2020, pose a significant biosecurity risk since some contain invasive or noxious species.
To protect the state’s farms and water systems, the department is strictly advising residents not to open, plant, or dispose of the seeds in the trash or toilets, as they could still sprout or spread. Texans are urged to keep the packages, which are likely originating from e-commerce platforms scams, and contact the State’s agricultural hotline at 1-800-TELL-TDA for professional collection and testing.
